Ben Davies is closing in on a move to Sheffield United, according to reports. This comes after a supposed Liverpool u-turn.
This comes from Sky Sports. They claim Ben Davies will soon join Sheffield United on loan from Liverpool.
Davies, of course, hasn’t played a single competitive minute for the Reds since arriving on February 1st. Despite that, initial reports claimed Liverpool wanted him to stay this season.
The Mirror said last month that Jurgen Klopp had personally asked him to turn down offers and remain with the squad. Clearly, however, there’s been a change of heart.
Liverpool will now let the player leave and he’s set to spend the season in the Championship with the Blades.
Ben Davies to join Sheffield United
So why the u-turn? We imagine it has to do with the fitness levels at Liverpool.
Keeping Davies around made a lot of sense while there were doubts over the other centre-backs. A worst-case scenario always felt possible.
Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all returned from long-term injuries this summer. All three may not have recovered in time for the season – or at least, that was the fear a month ago.
Keeping Davies around made sense in case of that scenario. Especially if someone like Nat Phillips chose to depart.
But all looks okay right now. Both Van Dijk and Matip completed full 90s against Norwich yesterday, suggesting they’re good to go.
That negates any real need to keep Davies around this season. Instead, it makes more sense to let him disappear somewhere at a decent level and rebuild his reputation.
We can’t imagine Davies will ever play for Liverpool and there’s no obvious future for him at Anfield. But that doesn’t mean he can’t use what he’s learned over the last six months to build a career.
