Jurgen Klopp believes ‘exceptional talent’ Curtis Jones will hit new levels this season. The Liverpool boss is clearly excited about the 20-year-old.
Jurgen Klopp ran over his midfield options on Friday. It’s a big subject right now given Liverpool will head into this new season lighter than last year.
Gini Wijnaldum left with the end of his contract, robbing Liverpool of a senior midfielder. They haven’t replaced the Dutchman, though, and it appears increasingly unlikely that they will.
Still, the boss is adamant that he’s got several good options in the central roles. One of those, says Klopp, is Curtis Jones.
“Curtis is another player who can and will make the next step and he’s an exceptional talent,” he said, per Liverpoolfc.com.
Klopp went on to say that Jones and Harvey Elliott are two young players who can reach new levels this season.
“That we [have], if you want, two players who are not new but can make the next step with Harvey and Curtis,” he said.
Klopp on Curtis Jones
Klopp is clearly very high on Jones and with good reason – the Scouser is a revelation. In fact, we think it flies under the radar somewhat just how good he is.
We recently went over why. Statistically, there are remarkably few young players who can keep up with Jones. We’re talking two or three in the Premier League.
He’s exactly the kind of midfielder Liverpool like, too. Jones is hard-working and disciplined, while also being incredible and progressing the ball forward.
Jones is built for a high-intensity game and we believe, like Klopp, he’ll quickly reach new levels. In fact, if he stays on his current trajectory, Jones will soon become far better than any midfielder Liverpool could sign.
Does that mean we wouldn’t sign anyone? No. We’d still like to see an addition if only to cover the worrisome injury records of others. It also makes little sense to put every egg in the Jones basket.
But there shouldn’t be any doubt that Liverpool have a special talent here. Hopefully, Jones can really show that this season.
