Ben Woodburn has surprised many in pre-season. The forgotten 21-year-old might have a future with Liverpool after all.
We wrote Ben Woodburn off before this pre-season. It was virtually impossible to see how he could have a Liverpool future, given he hasn’t played in the first-team in years.
And at 21? That’s not an age where you suddenly force your way into the Liverpool squad after a failed loan spell with Oxford United.
Woodburn was captaining Liverpool’s Under 23 team to finish the campaign as one of the more experienced players in that group. Honestly, we didn’t even expect him to feature in pre-season.
But feature he has and Woodburn, out of nowhere, has his name in people’s thoughts once again. He might even have a shot at some Liverpool games.
Ben Woodburn shines in pre-season
The Liverpool fans weren’t the only ones impressed by Woodburn, either. Both Jurgen Klopp and Pep Lijnders mentioned the 21-year-old after the Osasuna friendly.
“He played in the pre-season I think four, five, six, seven positions,” Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com. “Played right-back, did really well, played midfield, did really well, played the wing, did really well, played No.9, did really well. So that’s good.”
Lijnders then added: “I’m so happy for him. Like many of the team, it didn’t come easy for him, but he has an Anfield future.”
But while this might be a surprise to us, the coaching staff likely saw it coming. The Athletic claims Woodburn has been impressing in training since March.
Maybe, if things roll his way, the youngster might have a Liverpool future after all. The next few weeks promise to be key in that – can he earn a place in the squad?
We still can’t quite believe that’s a legitimate question.
