Watford striker Troy Deeney has some high praise for ‘world-class’ Virgil van Dijk. He struggles to explain how good the Liverpool star really is.
Virgil van Dijk is about as world-class as it gets – few could doubt that. The Liverpool centre-back has firmly made himself the game’s top defender.
And yet, that apparently doesn’t quite explain how good the 30-year-old really is. According to Troy Deeney, anyway.
The striker, now back in the Premier League with Watford, talked up Van Dijk on the Tubes and Ange Golf Life YouTube channel.
“Now it’s Van Dijk,” said Deeney when asked who the hardest centre-back is. “I can’t explain to people how good this guy is.
“He’s six foot six – I’ve said it before – smells unbelievable. He’s so good.
“Physically, he’s come through at Celtic and Southampton as well, so he knows how to put it about. But he’s just a Rolls Royce of a footballer. He’s world-class”.
World-class Virgil van Dijk
Deeney has certainly talked before about how good Van Dijk is, so this comes as no surprise. He’s in awe of the Dutchman.
But this does go to show just what a difference Van Dijk can make next season. It will be a bit like having a new signing compared to last season.
It’s difficult to go over all the things he does, especially when we can’t see half of them. There’s his leadership, the way he covers other players and the way teammates can feel a little more confident with Van Dijk around.
The latter could have a profound effect on several Liverpool stars. Thiago, to pick just one, doesn’t have to worry so much about his defensive work. Not as much as he did last season, anyway.
That should lead to a more forward-thinking, adventurous player. And when that player is as talented as Thiago, that means only good things.
So Deeney’s words a nice little reminder – Liverpool have a returning giant this season.
