Ben Woodburn has been a training ‘standout’ since March, according to reports. The youngster may just have a Liverpool future after all.
This comes from the Athletic. They claim Ben Woodburn has been a training standout at Liverpool for months now.
The 21-year-old started really impressing Jurgen Klopp and co. back in March. That’s continued right up to August, with Woodburn catching the eye in pre-season.
Now, the Athletic says, Liverpool don’t really want him to leave this summer. They’ll sell if he requests a move or if a big offer comes in – otherwise, the club would like Woodburn around.
This certainly lines up with comments from Klopp and Pep Lijnders this week. Both appear to rate Woodburn pretty highly.
“He played in the pre-season I think four, five, six, seven positions,” said Klopp. “Played right-back, did really well; played midfield, did really well; played the wing, did really well; played No.9, did really well. So that’s good.”
Lijnders echoed that sentiment.
“The energy he brings to the team is exactly what we stand for,” he said. “Football smart, a good mover and he unbalances the opposition constantly with the ball but also with his movement off it.
“I’m so happy for him. Like many of the team it didn’t come easy for him, but he has an Anfield future.”
Ben Woodburn impresses in training
Well, we really didn’t see this coming – we wrote off Woodburn’s Liverpool future at the back end of last season. He’s now 21, hasn’t featured for the first team in years and has had a string of disappointing loans.
And yet here we are, with Liverpool figuring out how to utilise Woodburn. It’s a shock.
We’ll have to wait and see if there’s space for him and if Woodburn can keep this form up, of course. Though, he likely can if he’s truly been standing out in training since March.
That suggests it’s not a fluke run of good fortune. Maybe things have finally clicked for the youngster.
