Liverpool’s pre-season has finished. The Reds capped off their run of friendlies with a convincing 3-1 win over Osasuna. Speaking after the game Jürgen Klopp and Pep Lijnders have heaped praise on Ben Woodburn for his contributions during pre-season.
Ben Woodburn bio
21-year-old Ben Woodburn joined the Liverpool academy at U7 level.
Since then he has risen through the ranks at a meteoric pace.
In 2016 he became the club’s youngest ever scorer when he netted against Leeds United.
However, since then his development has stalled due to a series of injuries and unsucessful loan moves.
He has spent time with Sheffield United, Oxford United and Blackpool.
At the moment his future is uncertain with reports circulating that European clubs hold a strong interest in the versatile youngster.
Klopp and Lijnders on Woodburn
The Athletic has said that the Reds’ coaching staff would be reluctant to let the player go.
This is because he has allegedly been so impressive in training.
His performances on the training ground earned him a spot in a number of pre-season friendlies. Speaking to the club’s official site after the 3-1 win over Osasuna, Jürgen Klopp said:
“[Woodburn] played in the pre-season I think four, five, six, seven positions. Played right-back, did really well; played midfield, did really well; played the wing, did really well; played No.9, did really well. So that’s good.”
Pep Lijnders was equally as enthusiastic about Woodburn, adding:
“Again, what a performance from Ben…I’m so happy for him. Like many of the team it didn’t come easy for him, but he has an Anfield future.”
What RTK has to say
Lijnders finished with a bold claim there.
Many expect Woodburn to be sold this summer having failed to break into the first team.
Given that he hasn’t made more than 11 appearances at any of his loan clubs, it would be a shock to see him forge an Anfield career now.
However, with world class coaches praising him and tutoring him, we can’t rule anything out.
