Joe Gomez expects Ibrahima Konate to 'thrive' this season

Joe Gomez expects big things of new Liverpool teammate Ibrahima Konate this season. The Frenchman has ‘all the attributes’ to thrive.

Joe Gomez is already impressed by Ibrahima Konate. That’s despite only working with him for under two months.

Konate moved to Liverpool from RB Leipzig this summer, of course, costing the Reds £36m. It’s a fairly hefty price for a young defender but the potential here is huge.

And it seems Gomez is already witnessing that potential. He talked about his teammate on Tuesday to and had some exciting things to say.

“Ibou’s top,” said Gomez. “He’s a great player and has adapted straight away to our style of play.

“Obviously it can be high-intensity sometimes but he’s got all the attributes to thrive I think.”

It’s always promising when a teammate can see the new guy settle in so quickly. Let alone that he can comfortably say that Konate has adapted already.

That could prove vital to kick off the campaign as we imagine Konate will be in the starting XI from the get-go. Gomez and Virgil van Dijk are still working their way back from injury, after all.

But this is all great to hear for another reason, too. We imagine that Gomez and Konate will be Liverpool’s first-choice partnership down the line.

So to see the more veteran player respect his teammate so quickly is a great step in that direction. It suggests Gomez knows how this will work already.

It’s certainly something to watch this season. Liverpool have an abundance of centre-backs now but Gomez and Konate will get games together.

And when they do, we’ll be witnessing the growth of Liverpool’s future at the back. If Gomez is right, that future is very bright.
