Three reasons why Liverpool signing Jonathan David makes perfect sense

Liverpool are hopefully in the market for a forward. This summer could see the Reds return for a target from last summer. According to TSN in Canada, Liverpool have Jonathan David high on their list of targets. Here’s three reasons why signing him would make perfect sense:

Liverpool get Jonathan David bargain

Last summer Lille signed the forward from Gent for around £25.6m.

The Canadian enjoyed a terrific debut season for Lille.

His side went on to beat PSG to the league title with David netting 13 goals and assisting three.

Despite his performances the club be forced to sell him for close to what they paid for him, perhaps even cheaper.

This is due to the financial crisis facing French clubs. Liverpool could bag a bargain with Jonathan David.

Versatility

Jürgen Klopp values versatility highly.

According to Transfermarkt, Jonathan David can be deployed as a striker, attacking midfielder or on either wing.

He can also operate as a false nine similar to Roberto Firmino.

This utility man status will make him incredibly attractive to the boss as the gaffer likes to operate with a small squad to keep players attentive and on their toes.

Potential for growth succession

At just 21-years-old there is still plenty to come from Jonathan David.

The Canadian has a decade or more left in the tank.

He will get better year in, year out. At first he’ll provide cover and competition but he could be the long term successor to Roberto Firmino.

The ideal scenario would see him cover and challenge the front three at first before ousting Bobby.

Given his young age he has plenty of time to do this and he’ll be learning all the time whilst he waits to nail down a starting berth.
