Virgil van Dijk posted an emotional message to Twitter after he finally returns for Liverpool. The Dutchman has been out for a long, long time.
Virgil van Dijk returns to the pitch and all is well again. Well, we still need him to regain full fitness and prove he’s over the injury but this was a fine start.
The Dutchman got some decent time against Hertha BSC on Thursday alongside Joe Gomez. Neither centre-back had featured at all in 2021.
Van Dijk went down against Everton on October 17th last year with a knee injury. That injury required surgery and he’s been out ever since.
It’s quite surreal to think about. Last season was effectively lost because of that injury, let alone Gomez’s a few weeks later. Having them back is simply fantastic.
There’s still a ways to go, of course, but this was the biggest step yet. And Van Dijk, understandably, had a few things to say.
Virgil van Dijk returns
“285 days ago, I started on a journey back towards playing,” he wrote on Twitter. “It’s hard to express how I am feeling, but it’s important to me that I say I feel blessed to have had the support of so many incredible people.
“The surgeon, my physios, coaches and staff who have been with me in my corner since day one. My teammates for giving me energy and keeping my head up. The fans for their love, support and encouragement.
“And most of all, my family because without them, I’d be nothing. Thank you. The work doesn’t stop now. It’s only just starting. We keep going!”
Van Dijk also shared a video of the moment him and Gomez were getting subbed on. They share a smile and a hug – two players who carried one another through the last year.
And now they’re back, finally. It’s hard not to get excited about the season to come after seeing all this.
