Ihattaren set for PSV exit; Liverpool should make a move

Mohammed Ihattaren looks to be on his way out of PSV Eindhoven this summer and we believe that Liverpool should move to sign him.

The 19-year-old is in the final year of his contract at the Dutch side. There is no sign of a new deal being signed.

According to Eindhovens Dagblad, both parties are hoping to secure a transfer this summer.

While there are no concrete offers as of yet, Ajax, Napoli and Wolfsburg have all been linked.

Ihattaren is sure to have many more suitors.

He burst onto the scene as a 17-year-old back in 2019/20 after making his senior PSV debut at 16 the season previous.

The attacking midfielder scored 3 goals and got five assists in his first 11 games that season.

His then youth-team coach, ex-Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, labelled his development as “spectacular”.

Speaking to Goal back in 2019, van Nistelrooy said: “He joined the winter break training camp with the first team last season and he just blew everybody away.

“That’s not normal with a player who is 16 years of age.”

Mark van Bommel, who was the PSV first-team manager at the time, said: “He has the quality with the ball that is extraordinary for his age.”

It looked very much like Ihattaren was going to be the future of Dutch football.

However, his development has stalled somewhat last season. His attitude and professionalism have been questioned by many, including his club.

That is why PSV are so willing to let him leave.

Despite this lapse in the last year or so, we believe that Liverpool should take advantage of the current situation and go sign Ihattaren this summer.

Ihattaren is clearly a player with phenomenal talent. You do not have such a huge impact on a team at just 17-years-old if you don’t have superb ability.

There is no denying that he slowed down after his opening few games of 2019/20. He ended the season with just four goals and seven assists in the Eredivisie and Europa League after his electric start.

Yet the Dutch campaign ended prematurely that season due to the pandemic. Perhaps Ihattaren could have regained some form in the latter stages of the campaign if it continued.

Van Bommel’s sacking in December 2019 did not help the player either.

His replacement, Roger Schmidt, has not been as keen to place his trust in the youngster.

It led to a fallout back in March, when PSV released a statement criticizing the player’s conduct.

It is clear that Ihattaren comes with some baggage.

But he is still just 19-years-old. A father figure-type manager like Jurgen Klopp could be exactly what he needs to harness his immense talent.

We spoke recently about Liverpool’s need to eliminate the “stepping stone club” when buying player and instead focus on picking up elite young talent when they are available on the cheap.

So they should snap up Ihattaren now before he goes to one of the clubs that he has been linked to and increases his value tenfold.

A natural No 10, he can play on either wing or deeper as a No 8. He is exactly the type of player that Liverpool need in that regard.

The Utrecht-born man can offer squad depth and cover a few positions for now before settling into one and making it his own going forward.

He would not cost much, so it is a low-risk move. If the worst comes to the worst, Liverpool could always sell him on next summer, probably at a profit.

Mohammed Ihattaren is certainly worth keeping tabs on.
