Neco Williams sets season goals; sounds like he might stay after all

Neco Williams might just stay at Liverpool, after all. The Welshman set some goals for the upcoming season.

There was a lot of talk last month that Neco Williams wouldn’t stay at Liverpool beyond this summer. The Athletic led the charge with that, claiming he saw his future elsewhere.

And for pretty understandable reasons, too. Williams wants to play regularly and he doesn’t believe that’s possible at Liverpool.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is the player ahead of him, for one, and the Scouser isn’t much older. It’s very difficult to see a long-term future at right-back when playing for Liverpool.

Thus Williams apparently wants to move somewhere with that long-term future. Somewhere he can see an attainable development path and grow as a player.

It’s hard to argue with that thinking and we wouldn’t at all be surprised if Williams departs before the season. But things might not be as locked-in as we thought.

Could Neco Williams stay

Earlier in the week, we wrote how it looked obvious that Williams was off. He sat on the bench for Liverpool’s first two friendlies while the younger Conor Bradley featured.

Clearly, we jumped the gun on that one. Williams played Liverpool’s friendly against Mainz on Friday and his comments after the game don’t paint an impression that he’s off.

“Every season you play it only gets bigger and bigger,” he told Liverpoolfc.com. “Last season was good for me, I’m getting the minutes in and getting the game time.

“Hopefully this season I can play a bit more, keep working hard and keep pushing Trent and [Andy Robertson], and hopefully get some game time.”

Admittedly, he was never going to say “well I’m off and not taking the training very seriously”. But Williams could have left it at “I’ll see what the future holds”.

He certainly sounds open to staying and his appearance against Mainz certainly suggests he’s not moving imminently. Harry Wilson, for instance, sat that one out because of an impending move to Fulham.

So while the 20-year-old could still leave, it feels as though Williams isn’t out the door just yet.
