Liverpool have reportedly made contact with Piotr Zielinski about a potential summer transfer.
The Reds are on the lookout for a new central midfielder after Gini Wijnaldum’s exit.
Numerous names have been linked, with Napoli star Zielinski the latest.
According to Italian journalist Ciro Troist, Liverpool and Manchester United have had phone calls with the Pole’s agents this summer.
However, neither side is expected to make a serious bid for the player.
Speaking to Marte Sport Live (via Area Napoli), Troist said: “Zielinski? His entourage has got a couple of calls from Liverpool and Manchester United.
“I struggle to think of big-figure hits. Concrete offers have not arrived.”
It is not the first time that Liverpool have been linked to Zielinksi.
He almost signed for the Reds back in 2016, before he joined Napoli from Udinese.
The Italian side rejected at £12m bid according to the BBC.
It got so close that Zielinski was even pictured in a Liverpool shirt while training at loan side Empoli.
However, a move did not materialise and the player instead moved to Napoli for a reported £14.4m.
It did not happen back in 2016, but will it happen in 2021?
Zielinski would be a good fit for Liverpool but not the right age profile
We do not see Liverpool signing Piotr Zielinski this summer.
While we believe that the Reds made contact with his entourage, they would have done this for numerous players.
They probably just wanted to look into a deal in case he was available for a bargain fee.
There is no doubt that he would be a great addition to the side.
Last season was his best in a Napoli shirt, especially in terms of output.
He scored eight goals and assisted 10 more in Serie A.
This had Zielinksi at a huge 0.64 goals and assists per 90 minutes.
The only issue is his age.
At 27-years-old, he is not old. In fact, he is right in his prime.
Yet Liverpool should be targetting someone slightly younger. Someone that is performing at a good level before he has even entered his prime years.
For this reason, we believe that there will not be much more to this story.
