Pep Lijnders picked out Caoimhin Kelleher for praise after Liverpool held a training tournament. The Irishman was ‘just insane’ according to the coach.
Pep Lijnders put out another training diary on Thursday. He’s been doing this throughout Liverpool’s pre-season and they’re consistently excellent.
This time around, Lijnders went over a training tournament Liverpool held. It was a finishing contest, pitting ‘young’ players against ‘old’ players.
“The young team won the finishing tournament,” he explained. “Trent [Alexander-Arnold] was using his shooting skills to lead them to victory.
“There were two different exercises where they had six or seven scoring opportunities from different angles and positions in and around the area, always stimulating this ‘net’ feeling.
“The young team showed that every way into the goal is the right way. The ugly ones count the most, haha!”
Lijnders picked out one player for special praise in training, however: Caoimhin Kelleher.
“To be honest, the player of the tournament was Kelleher,” said Lijnders. “His shot-stopping and speed reactions were just insane.
“It shows that a goalkeeper can win you tournaments. There was some swearing from the older players towards him!”
Kelleher shines in training
Hearing that Kelleher is impressing is wonderful. He’s a huge prospect and one we hope to see more of.
That’s difficult, of course, with Alisson Becker ahead of him. Liverpool can’t exactly throw the Irishman into the side at the expense of the Brazilian. At least, not in big games.
Is that going to hurt his development? We think it might, unfortunately. Nothing beats playing regular football, after all.
Goalkeepers tend to peak later than most, though. Maybe that affords Kelleher time to wait things out – but it remains to be seen how much waiting he’s prepared to do.
Alisson may be around for some time and that doesn’t suit Kelleher. This season will be interesting, then, as we see how Liverpool use the Irishman.
