Liverpool continued their pre-season on Friday with a 1-0 win over Mainz 05. Here are 3 things we learned form the friendly.
Staying or leaving?
The team news taught us our first things today – it appears Harry Wilson is leaving imminently. That’s according to journalist David Lynch.
The Welshman will apparently join Fulham soon and thus Liverpool left him out of today’s game. They don’t want an injury to jeopardise things, after all.
On the flip side, we were surprised that Neco Williams started this one. We thought he absence on Tuesday suggested something similar – that Liverpool were preparing his exit.
Instead, he played the second half here over Conor Bradley. Maybe Williams isn’t as close to leaving as thought?
Elliott experiment continues
One of the most interesting things about Tuesday’s games was how Jurgen Klopp used Harvey Elliott. The teenager has made his name as a right-winger but he played centre-midfield.
We think that’s a really smart move and we’re happy to see it continue. Elliott again looked dangerous and seems to relish his freedom in the role.
The 18-year-old is able to move across the pitch, popping up in areas with bursts of energy. It suits him and seeing him develop there will be a pre-season highlight.
Still heating up
Another big takeaway, much like with Tuesday, is that Liverpool are very much still getting going. They don’t look fluid yet and the mix-and-match teams are having an effect.
It’s to be expected, really, but it does limit what we can learn. Everything is still very much in fitness mode at the moment, rather than team building.
But it’s still very early in pre-season and Liverpool have plenty of players to return. It’s not a worry, more of a consideration – there’s still a lot more to come over the next few weeks.
