Manchester City legend Yaya Toure was at pre-season training with Liverpool on Thursday. But why was the Ivorian there?
Yaya Toure raised some eyebrows on Thursday as he showed up to pre-season training with Liverpool. He was even decked out in the Reds’ training gear.
Given Toure is a Manchester City legend, it was quite a surprise to see him there. The 38-year-old sent out a Tweet that grabbed further attention.
“Great to meet coach [Jurgen] Klopp and watch the [Liverpool]squad training!” he wrote.
“Top manager and what a humble man, really enjoyed my time with you coach Klopp and the lads here today.”
So why exactly was Toure there?

Liverpoolfc.com found the answer by speaking to Sadio Mane. It turns out the two are friends and Toure asked the Reds’ no.10 to ask Klopp if he could show up.
“I said, ‘Yaya, do you think it is the best idea to come to watch our training?!’” Mane explained. “He said, ‘My friend, I’m coming there! Just ask your boss!’
“He is a very, very good guy and I have known him since 2004.
“He’s a good friend of mine so we always keep in touch and when he asked me if I can ask the boss whether he can come to watch training I said, ‘With pleasure’ and I think the boss was happy to have Yaya with us today to watch training and learn something because I wish him all the best.
“He wants to be a manager in the future and all the boys were happy to see him, to have a quick conversation with him and have a little bit of a talk about City and Liverpool. It was nice to meet him again.”
So there’s your answer. Toure and Mane are friends, with the former City midfielder wanting to see how Klopp runs training as he aims to become a manager.
Now if only we could have got him in that kit 10 years ago…
