"Our pressing monster!": Lijnders delighted by Jota return

Pep Lijnders has reiterated his love of Diogo Jota following the forward’s return to the club this week.

The Portuguese star has joined up with the rest of the squad in Austria for their pre-season training camp.

He was allowed a late return to training after his participation in Euro 2020 with his national side.

Portugal were eliminated in the last 16, which has allowed Jota to join up with the Liverpool squad relatively early compared to some of his teammates who went deep into the competition.

One person that is certainly delighted with Jota’s return is assistant manager Pep Lijnders.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, he said: “While I’m sitting here and writing, Diogo just shook me ‘awake’ saying hello.

“It’s great to see him – fresh, fit and ready. Our pressing monster just arrived!”

We know that Lijnders is a huge fan of Jota. He was instrumental in bringing him to the club last summer.

This is not the first time that the Dutchman has spoken highly of the player.

Yet it is possibly the most telling example.

We all know what Liverpool’s game is based on – pressing from the front.

Jota is fantastic at this element of the game, which is clearly what encouraged the Reds to bring him in. Being described as a “pressing monster” is a giveaway sign of how highly he is rated.

It is clear that the 24-year-old is going to be the future of Liverpool’s attack.

The style of play that has been implemented by Jurgen Klopp will be continued long after he is gone.

Jota’s ability means that he will be a key part of that.

He now has a long pre-season with the squad, which he was not afforded last season. Yet he still made a huge impact when he was fit enough to do so.

So, expect Diogo Jota’s development to continue at a rapid rate and for him to have a major role to play in 2021/22.
