Liverpool lead the transfer race for Houssem Aouar, according to reports. The Reds have wanted this for a long time now.
This comes from Le10Sport in France. They claim the transfer race for Houssem Aouar is heating up and Liverpool are in front.
Liverpool, they say, are the club with the ‘greatest probability’ of signing Aouar. Not that they’re the only ones looking.
Arsenal are also very interested in the Frenchman. They lag behind Liverpool, though, who don’t have to sell before buying, according to the outlet.
As for a fee, Aouar would cost between £17m and £21m – a very cheap price, all things considered. The Telegraph said he’d cost £54m last September, which is a dramatic price fall.
Aouar’s middling form over the last season contributes to that but above all, this would be Liverpool taking advantage of a financial crisis in French football. The Athletic detailed that here.
This is very far from the first link between Aouar and the Reds. The Mirror claimed last summer that he was a priority target, though one Liverpool moved on from – presumably because they signed Thiago.
Most interestingly of all, though, is this from David Maddock where he claims Liverpool have tracked Aouar for six years now. It certainly isn’t a fleeting interest, then.
Liverpool to secure Houssem Aouar transfer?
We wrote last week that Liverpool seem quite lucky here. Aouar remains a very good player with fantastic potential at 23, yet the Reds could save themselves over 50% of his fee.
We’ve been saying for a while that he fits the bill. Aouar is a player who can defend in midfield very well but excels moving forward. He’ll carry the ball, pass the ball, and make things happen.
Add in his experience as a leader within the Lyon squad and it’s hard to see negatives in his signing. We think Jurgen Klopp could work wonders with the Frenchman if Liverpool do make their move.
But it’s worth considering that Liverpool may need to sell to buy, despite what Le10Sport say. The Athletic have said that for a while, that funds are short after signing Ibrahima Konate and the Reds’ bloated squad needs trimming.
But perhaps that’s happening already. Deals for Marko Grujic and Taiwo Awoniyi seem close – the BBC report Liverpool will receive £17m for the two.
It would be the lower end of Aouar’s reported price range but it could be enough.
