Negotiations about a potential swap deal between Saul and Antoine Griezmann have stalled, with Liverpool reportedly ready to swoop.
Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have been in talks for days now. However, they have still failed to come to an agreement due to complications over how much money Atleti have to pay along with Saul.
This comes from Spanish outlet El Larguero, who are usually very accurate with Barca-related news.
They say that a potential deal is cooling down for a number of reasons.
As well as the cash-plus-player issue, Atletico feel that they cannot afford to pay Griezmann’s wages.
Yet the most important one from a Liverpool standpoint is that Saul allegedly would prefer a move to England than Catalonia.
This news comes at an interesting time, as Fabrizio Romano has also recently claimed that Liverpool are ready to step in if the swap deal collapses.
However, they will have some strong competition from Chelsea.
So will Liverpool sign Saul or will the Griezmann swap happen?
The latest updates are very interesting. So, let’s have a quick summary.
From all the reliable reports that have come out, the situation appears to be as follows.
Atletico want to sell Saul. This encouraged Liverpool, who need a midfielder, to seriously consider him as an option.
But then, Barcelona, who are in a very difficult financial situation, saw that they could offload Antoine Griezmann to Atletico and sign a much-needed midfielder while also saving a lot of money.
Atletico were open to Griezmann’s return, but he would have had to take a big wage cut.
Meanwhile, Barca saw that Griezmann’s value was higher than Saul’s, so wanted Atletico to give them cash as well as the player.
Now, neither side is really willing to budge on wages, transfer fee, etc., which has once again opened the door to Liverpool.
So this is where we are now.
Is that cleared up?
At this rate of going, it is impossible to tell what will happen. The next few days will be crucial.
If Saul himself pulls the plug because he wants to go to the Premier League, then that will be that.
All Liverpool need then is for the Spaniard to choose them over Chelsea and agree a fee with Atletico.
It is all a bit all over the place, but we do believe that the Reds have a serious interest in making this signing.
