"No setbacks at all": Klopp gives promising Gomez injury update

Jurgen Klopp had delivered some good news to Liverpool fans regarding Joe Gomez and his return from injury.

The centre-back has been out of action since picking up a freak knee injury in England training late last year.

Gomez is currently in pre-season training with the rest of the squad in Austria.

Klopp has told that he is making good progress on his return.

When asked if Gomez had suffered any reactions after re-joining team training this week, Klopp said: “Not at all. No setbacks at all. Not for Joe, nothing – he’s trained completely normal.

“These boys are not injured anymore, they are just not at 100 per cent yet. There are usually setbacks but so far there were no setbacks with Joe and Virgil and nobody [else] – they are all fine.

“What they had to do they did, no reaction with the knee, nothing, all fine. The world wide web had obviously too much time.”

This is excellent news for Liverpool fans.

Gomez can be a world-class defender when he is 100% fit. His partnership with Virgil van Dijk is one of the best in the world.

Ibrahima Konate and a fit-again Joel Matip will provide him with some extra competition.

Yet we reckon that the 24-year-old can see it off if he hits the ground running on his return.

Gomez will probably be ready for the start of the new season.

He and van Dijk are a little bit behind Matip in terms of a comeback, but the pre-season friendlies should see them get up to speed.

If they get two to three games in before the Reds play Norwich, then Jurgen Klopp will have to make a big decision.

The only issue will come if Gomez does suffer a setback in the next few weeks. If he gets any sort of delay at all, he probably won’t be ready to play the first few games.

It will be interesting to see what pair the boss goes for on the opening day.
