Liverpool are currently assessing their squad ahead of next season. The Reds need to decide just who they need to bring in to strengthen the side and who can be chopped to raise funds. If Mateusz Musialowski and Harvey Elliott prove themselves in pre-season they could save the club millions.
Harvey Elliott time to shine?
Last season the Reds sent Harvey Elliott out on loan to Blackburn Rovers.
He was one of the Championship side’s stars of the season, constantly standing out.
Starting 31 games and appearing as a sub in a further 10 in the Championship, he netted seven goals and assisted 11.
Considering the youngster’s slight frame and the physicality of the division his dominance was astounding.
This season could see the 18-year-old afforded a chance as a squad player with the senior side.
Should he impress during pre-season he could take Xherdan Shaqiri’s place.
Mateusz Musialowski wildcard
One player who will be doing everything he can to impress the boss is Mateusz Musialowski.
The 17-year-old Polish Messi has become one of the most exciting prospects in the Reds’ academy.
He scooped a goal of the month award last term for his spectacular solo effort against Newcastle U18s.
He’s already trained with the first team on numerous occasions and has reportedly impressed the senior players and coaches.
Whilst he’s expected to step into the U23s next term a strong pre-season showing against senior sides could make him a wildcard option.
If Elliott and Musialowski impress they could save us millions.
Should the two show that they have what it takes to make an impact against senior opposition (Elliott already has) then the club may forgo the signing of replacements for Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi.
Saving this money could help the Reds invest more heavily in signing a striker and a centre midfielder.
Given how tight finances are at the minute being able to call academy wonderkids up to the bench could prove invaluable.
