Report: Liverpool left behind as Tottenham Hotspur bid for Houssem Aouar

Tottenham Hotspur have made an offer to Lyon for Houssem Aouar, according to reports. It’s one Liverpool will struggle to match.

This comes from ESPN. They claim Tottenham Hotspur have offered Lyon an interesting package for Houssem Aouar.

Spurs have put Tanguy Ndombele on the table in a potential swap deal. Ndombele, a France international, joined the club from Lyon two years ago.

That’s an offer few teams can match. Lyon got the very best out of Ndombele while he was there and may see this swap deal as their best shot at replacing Aouar.

It’s something that could affect Liverpool, too, as ESPN had just reported that the Reds were in the mix for Aouar. Not that they’re a new arrival.

The Mirror had them as interested in Aouar a year ago, with David Maddock later saying they’d tracked him for five years. The midfielder is clearly someone they rate highly.

So ESPN’s claim that Lyon could accept as low as £17m came as a welcome surprise. Especially as the Telegraph had that figure at £54m in September.

Tottenham bid for Aouar

No one can really match the Ndombele offer. Spurs are putting up a player that certainly outweighs anyone Lyon could sign with £17m. Even if he’s only shone in bursts in London, the French club know how to get his best.

But it’s worth considering that this might be exactly the type of offer Lyon don’t want. Spurs clearly want to get away without spending money here – something that likely won’t work.

There’s a financial crisis in French football right now, as the Athletic details here. The collapse of a Ligue 1 TV deal plunged clubs into a mess at the worst time. They’re coming off the back of a season without fans, after all.

Thus Lyon will almost certainly prefer money to a player here. It’s impossible to match the weight of Ndombele for Aouar but there’s a very good chance Lyon don’t want clubs to do so.

They’d likely prefer straight cash as they try to deal with financial losses. Ndombele, as good as he is, doesn’t help with that.

We still think offering Ndombele will drive Aouar’s price up over the £17m mark. Maybe even closer to £30m. Spurs have certainly stolen a march on rivals with their offer and left the others behind – but there’s a way to catch up.

If Liverpool do want Aouar, we think he’s still there for the taking.
