Mateusz Musialowski signed his first professional contract with Liverpool on Friday. Now the teenager can start targeting the Reds’ first-team.
It’s hardly a shock that Mateusz Musialowski got a professional Liverpool contract. His performances for the Under 18s more than earned one.
Musialowski bagged eight goals and three assists across 19 games in the U18 Premier League last season. He was even better in the Youth Cup, though, scoring four times as the Reds made the final.
But the raw numbers only tell half the story. What Musialowski can do with a ball is remarkable at 17 and he regularly looks special.
We’re sure you’ve seen it by now but his goal against Newcastle United last season was a genuine eye-opener. Very few players are capable of running with the ball like that – at any age.
Musialowski says he tried to replicate Lionel Messi there. We’d argue he did a good job. Better than most could.
Musialowski agrees Liverpool contract
We’ve written before how it’s time to get excited about Musialowski and this contract is a pretty good point to start. He’s officially around long-term and with that in mind, his goals change.
His immediate first step is getting into the Under 23 team, of course, and we imagine that happens next season. But Musialowski should also have eyes on a first-team role.
We’ve seen the likes of Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones and Neco Williams earn first-team opportunities as teenagers over the last two years. Before that came Ben Woodburn and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp are happy to give these chances to kids, even just in the cups. And Musialowski is showing enough talent to get a similar spot in the squad.
We think that could come next season. Perhaps it’s in the FA Cup come new year, or maybe the League Cup over the next few months.
Maybe things go really well again, Liverpool wrap up the title quickly, and can afford to play kids as they did in 2020. Maybe.
But no matter how the chance comes about, Musialowski should get one. Because if he can show similar qualities at a senior level already, Liverpool are well on their way to a special player.
And we think it’s worth finding out.
