Liverpool are readying an offer for Ismaila Sarr, according to reports. The one-time Diogo Jota alternative makes some sense.
This comes from 90min. They claim Liverpool could offer £40m for Ismaila Sarr. The Reds want a winger and the player fits the right profile.
Sarr would like to make the move, too. Liverpool would need to match Watford’s asking price but the 23-year-old will request they accept an offer.
It’s worth noting that the Athletic reported two months ago that Watford could sell Sarr. They’re not actively seeking a sale but as ‘realistic’ about the probability.
The Hornets did well to hold onto Sarr last summer, taking a very talented player into the Championship. It proved to be a very smart decision as he bagged 13 goals on Watford’s way to promotion.
That simultaneously makes it easier and harder for Watford to hang onto the player. On the one hand, they now have Premier League money, meaning there’s no direct need to sell Sarr.
But on the other, his performances last season only drew more interest. Including from a returning Liverpool.
Liverpool to make Isamaila Sarr offer?
Liverpool reportedly wanted Sarr last summer, too. 90min actually mention that in their report but it’s not news.
The Liverpool Echo said last year that the Reds had three names in mind as they searched for a forward: Sarr, Jonathan David and Diogo Jota.
They signed Jota, of course, who was presumably their first choice. David joined Lille, where he won Ligue 1 last season, and Sarr was the only one to stay put.
And so as Liverpool look to boost their forward options once again, a move for Sarr makes complete sense. After all, Jota worked out wonderfully – perhaps his alternative could, too?
The squad could end up with two of their three options from last summer, both of whom are under 25. It’s potentially great business.
Admittedly, 90min aren’t the strongest source in the world, so we won’t hold our collective breath on this. But it’s a move that would make sense and no one should be surprised if it turns out to be accurate.
Though, there is one problem. The Africa Cup of Nations is set for January 2022 and Liverpool will see two forwards leave as it stands.
Both Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane will take part, assuming the tournament takes place. If Liverpool sign a winger this summer, it’s likely to cover that.
Sarr wouldn’t fit the bill there, however. He will almost certainly join Mane in Senegal’s squad, taking him away, too. So if Liverpool are at all worried about that period in the season, Sarr isn’t the right signing.
