Liverpool are ‘fascinated’ by Domenico Berardi despite a price rice, according to reports. The player just shone at Euro 2020.
This comes from Corriere della Sera. They claim Liverpool are ‘fascinated’ by Domenico Berardi and would like to sign him this summer.
They’re not alone in that – AC Milan also like the player. Both have a significant price rise to contend with, however.
Sassuolo now want roughly £43m for Berardi – a jump of £18m from before Euro 2020. Berardi had some great games this summer and, apparently, that was enough to boost his value.
Yet Liverpool would still like him. He’s one of their targets and the Reds may just pay that larger amount to get him.
Berardi price rise
Liverpool can’t do too much better than Berardi if they want an instant boost to their attack. He’s a fine goalscoring winger who can cover multiple positions and is right in the peak of his career.
He’s coming off the back of the biggest success of his career, too. That should only help him reach another level going forward.
So we’d call Berardi a ‘win now’ signing. He’s not an investment into the future, given he turns 27 next month. You may well get four or five years out of him but you can only really bank on three.
Any elite seasons you get beyond that is a bonus.
And maybe that’s enough? Liverpool’s squad is undoubtedly ready to contend for the biggest trophies, now the injured stars are back. Throwing in an attacker with 17 Serie A goals last season, right in his prime, only increases those chances of delivering the title.
£43m would be a bargain for Berardi if he helped deliver the Premier League or Champions League. No one would argue against that. It’s just a risk.
If he struggled or didn’t fit in, then Liverpool have wasted money that could have gone towards investing in their long-term future. And Berardi wouldn’t get too long to fit in – they’d want him at his best right away.
So Liverpool certainly have some thinking to do on this one. If they want to simply push forward on trophies and worry about the future later, Berardi is a fine signing.
But they’ve got to be sure that they want to spend their money that way. Berardi commands a high price now and it would drain the funds.
