Liverpool almost certainly won’t bid for Youri Tielemans in the transfer window, according to reports. The Reds know where value is and it’s not with the Leicester City man.
This comes from the Telegraph. They claim that Liverpool will not make a move for Youri Tielemans in the transfer window.
The number one reason for that is clear: he’d be too expensive. And that’s almost certainly true, given Leicester City are not a struggling club in need of money.
Tielemans has grown into one of the Premier League’s best midfielders over the last couple of years. He’s a brilliant player and one Liverpool would almost certainly love. At the same time, he really would cost a fortune.
We’d be shocked, for instance, if Leicester accepted less than they got for Harry Maguire’s move to Manchester United. Tielemans is a better player and one without an obvious replacement.
But that’s par for the course. Premier League players are incredibly expensive and that plays into Liverpool’s thinking.
The Telegraph claim that the Reds will target players from outside the Premier League. Couple that with their stance on Tielemans and it’s clear that the Reds see value outside of their domestic league.
Liverpool rule out Youri Tielemans transfer
This shouldn’t shock anyone. The idea that Liverpool would spend a huge amount on Tielemans was always a little fanciful, given their current options.
That’s not to say Tielemans wouldn’t be a magnificent signing – he’s just not a necessary one. Liverpool already have their first-choice midfield set for next season.
Jordan Henderson, Thiago and Fabinho will almost certainly be Jurgen Klopp’s go-to. It’s not an area Liverpool need to spend a fortune, even if you believe Tielemans would force his way into the XI.
The only times Liverpool have spent truly enormous amounts have been when there’s an obvious upgrade. Virgil van Dijk arrived when Liverpool had a shocking defence.
Alisson Becker joined during a goalkeeping crisis. Those are the only two times the club has spent over £55m.
Tielemans would join that duo in price but not in necessity. We completely understand why Liverpool may see better value outside of the Premier League, then.
No, they might not find a player as ‘ready’ as Tielemans but they can afford to wait on a player to adapt. That allows the club to look abroad for deals and it’s a luxury they’ll apparently take.
