Atletico Madrid have rejected an offer from Liverpool for Saul Niguez, according to reports. The Reds supposedly want the player.
This comes from Mundo Deportivo. They claim Liverpool recently put in a £34m offer for Saul Niguez.
Atletico Madrid rejected it, however. They want more for the 26-year-old, though they will accept a bid if Saul asks to leave.
There’s a strange proposal on the horizon, too. Barcelona may offer Antoine Griezmann in exchange for Saul, which could seriously hurt Liverpool’s chances.
The Catalonians lost their first-choice midfield transfer this summer as Gini Wijnaldum opted to join Paris Saint-Germain at the last minute. Saul, though, would fill the void nicely.
They have little room for Griezmann, too, given both Memphis Depay and Sergio Aguero joined on free transfers. Atletico would be very happy to welcome the Frenchman back.
Liverpool, then, have some thinking to do. This won’t be straightforward.
Liverpool make Saul Niguez offer
We’re a little doubtful this is all accurate, though it does make some sense. A Griezmann/Saul trade seems quite fanciful but at the same time, it suits both teams.
Liverpool can’t really compete with it, either, as there’s no chance £40m in cash secures Atletico someone as good as Griezmann. The Reds need to hope there’s nothing in that, then.
As for their own offer, £34m was always going to be a difficult one to swing. It’s a reasonable price for someone looking to leave but not quite enough for a player of Saul’s quality. Atletico would need to feel quite generous to let him leave for that.
Liverpool might need to push it closer to £40m, then. Or maybe they just need to structure their offer differently and offer more upfront.
Either way, they have some work to do if they’re to sign Saul this summer.
