Liverpool should make a move for Franck Kessie. Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly looking at the midfielder.
Eurosport claims Tottenham Hotspur are ready to bid for Franck Kessie. The Ivorian only has one year left on his contract and Milan are struggling to agree on a new one.
It opens the door to offers. Kessie may not be cheap but Milan should listen to offers here.
The report also mentions that Spurs aren’t actually prioritising a midfielder, though. They simply see an opportunity to sign a very good player and feel like they should take it.
Liverpool, though, do need a midfielder this summer. And Kessie might be exactly what they’re looking for.
Gini Wijnaldum left Liverpool this month, joining Paris Saint-Germain at the end of his contract. He leaves a huge gap in the Reds’ midfield options.
We do expect Thiago to be the first-XI replacement but he’s a different kind of player. Liverpool lose a high-energy, box-to-box player in Wijnaldum and they’ve found those to be vital over the last five years.
Kessie, though, is exactly that. Just look at his stats in Serie A last season. He averaged over one goal and one interception per game, assisted four goals, and maintained an 89% pass completion.
Kessie even added a couple of goals from open play, along with 11 penalties.
He’s also very reliably available. The midfielder has played in 37, 34, 35 and 37 Serie A games over the last four years. With all of Liverpool’s injury problems, that’s reliability they could use. It’s Wijnaldum levels.
And above all, Kessie is still only 24 years old. He’s got a lot of room for growth and we’d expect Liverpool to help him fulfil his potential.
The Reds have built their team on picking up players who are starting to come into their prime and kicking them on another level or two. We see Kessie as someone in that mould.
He’s clearly moving into his best years and playing his best football yet. In the right environment, theirs the potential for Kessie to become a superstar.
And at 24, he’d also give Liverpool a much-needed long-term option in midfield. Both Jordan Henderson and Thiago are now 30 – they won’t be at their best in a few years.
Kessie, though, would be right in his best years exactly as they begin to wind down. That, to us, is vital for assuring Liverpool are successful for years to come.
We don’t know exactly what Milan would ask for in return. If Spurs feel it’s doable, though, we’re confident Liverpool can too.
