Liverpool are strongly interested in signing Napoli star Lorenzo Insigne this summer, according to reports.
The winger is struggling to agree terms on an extension to his contract that expires next summer.
Speaking to 7 Gold (via Area Napoli), journalist Fabio Santini said: “Lorenzo Insigne asked Napoli for a sum equal to €5m (around £4.2m).
“Aurelio De Laurentiis, however, has no intention of pleasing him and has offered him €3.5m (£2.9m), a figure much lower than what the Napoli captain would like.
He continued: “To make the situation even more complicated, there is thick competition for the player.
“I know that Lorenzo Insigne has strong interest from Liverpool and Atletico Madrid.”
RTK View: Insigne to Liverpool makes sense – but only if he is cheap
News of Liverpool interest in Insigne is rather fascinating.
If he is going to be out of contract next year, he may be available to buy on the cheap this summer.
Napoli may prefer to get some cash in to replace him now rather than get nothing next year.
We noted that while Liverpool don’t usually go for players around the 30-years-old mark, they could make an exception for Insigne.
He is a top-class player that would suit the Reds perfectly. He proved this by having his best-ever season in 2020/21.
Insigne is also standing out at Euro 2020.
While they would only get a short few seasons from him, it would be worth it if they can get him for less than £20m.
He would be the ideal replacement for Xherdan Shaqiri if he is joined in the entrance door by another young attacker.
Maybe he could be a stop-gap before someone like Kylian Mbappe joins next summer.
It will be intriguing to see if this story develops in the coming weeks.
