Virgil van Dijk was the first to go, he ruptured his ACL in the Merseyside Derby in October.

Joe Gomez suffered a similar injury when training with England in November.

Joel Matip struggled on until January when he too was ruled out.

The string of fitness issues offered Nat Phillips a chance in the side just weeks after he’d been on the verge of signing for Swansea City.

The defender finished the season a cult hero with 17 appearances in all competitions and the nickname Bolton Baresi.

Nat Phillips close to Burnley move

Last week The Athletic reported that Liverpool want £15m for their cult hero centre back.

A number of clubs were said to be in the running for the aerial force.

The Daily Star (27th June, p42) has now claimed that Nat Phillips is close to sealing a move to Burnley.

The Clarets are allegedly close to beating competition from the likes of Brighton and Newcastle United.

This is the perfect move for Nat Phillips.

Burnley are a famously physical and defensive unit.

The Bolton Baresi’s aerial prowess will shine at Turf Moor, he’s all blood and thunder and that suits Sean Dyche’s side down to the ground.

He’ll be sure to get a standing ovation from the Kop upon on his return.
