Liverpool are going to be in the market for a midfielder this summer. The Reds have a big hole in the middle of the park due to the exit of Gini Wijnaldum. According to Noel Whelan, Liverpool could fancy a move for James Ward-Prowse.
Hole in midfield
After five years with the club Gini Wijnaldum is leaving Liverpool this summer.
The Dutchman was a nigh on ever present under Jürgen Klopp.
The midfielder clocked up an extraordinary amount of minutes due to his reliability and durability.
Gini was rarely injured during his years at Anfield and as a result we’ll need to sign an equally reliable replacement.
We simply can’t count on the fitness of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita.
Liverpool and James Ward-Prowse
There are a number of players being touted as a potential successor to Gini Wijnaldum.
According to Noel Whelan, Liverpool could move for James Ward-Prowse.
The striker turned pundit told Football Insider:
“We did wonder where they’re all going to fit in if [Aston Villa] go for Ward-Prowse. Then again, Liverpool might fancy Ward-Prowse. He’s that kind of midfield player as well, especially when it comes to set-pieces as well.
“You’ve got to look at delivery, you’ve got to look at everything. He’s tenacious in midfield, he’s got that energy about him and is a player that could probably suit Liverpool as well.”
What RTK has to say
Liverpool moving for Ward-Prowse wouldn’t make sense.
Southampton will be unlikely to sanction another major sale to the Reds.
Furthermore, he would cost a fortune.
The Reds are more likely to pursue a move for Florian Neuhaus who will come at likely half of what JWP would end up costing.
