Liverpool fans will want to forget the 2020/21 season. It was a disaster for the Reds. An injury crisis cost us dearly as we spent the season without a key star. Liverpool fans have been buzzing over a video of Virgil van Dijk in training.
Virgil van Dijk injury
One terrible afternoon in October 2020 saw the Reds’ title defence derailed.
Liverpool dominated the opening exchanges and looked set to land a significant advantage early in the first half.
The ball fell to Virgil van Dijk and Jordan Pickford flew in at the Dutchman’s knees.
Nailed on penalty and nailed on red card for violent conduct. Had to be.
The Reds were denied a penalty due to an offside decision given by VAR.
Meanwhile the referee forgot that he could still send off Jordan Pickford despite the flag.
Virgil couldn’t carry on and we learned a day later that the Dutchman was out for the season with a ruptured ACL.
Van Dijk absence and return
The injury of Virgil van Dijk opened the floodgates. Thiago suffered a serious knock in the same game, he missed 17 games.
Joe Gomez was ruled out for the season a couple of weeks later.
Joel Matip struggled on until January when he too was ruled out for the duration.
We are expecting Virgil van Dijk to be back in the starting lineup for the opening game of the season against Norwich.
His recovery has been impressive and this week he has shown off with a video from the training ground, smashing one in past the keeper.
