Lazio hope to complete a deal for Xherdan Shaqiri in the coming weeks, according to reports. The Liverpool winger is one of two targets for the Italians.
This comes from TuttoMercatoWeb. The Italian outlet claims Lazio believe they can sign Xherdan Shaqiri relatively soon.
They’ve made their first contacts over a deal and it ‘could become concrete’ in the coming weeks. It seems Shaqiri might not be a Liverpool player for much longer.
Though, the report also mentions Lazio wanting Julian Brandt. He’s a player we’ve actually tipped for Liverpool, though it appears he might be on his way to Serie A.
What’s unclear is whether Shaqiri is merely an alternative to Brandt or a separate signing. They say Brandt would cost over £20m – a fee the Liverpool man likely won’t come close to.
On the one hand, that suggests they might do both. On the other, Shaqiri could simply be more in their price range.
Shaqiri to Lazio?
We don’t expect Shaqiri to stick around for next season. Not with Harvey Elliott reportedly becoming part of the first-team squad.
It only makes sense to have the teenager around if he’s going to play, otherwise you halt his development. And Shaqiri would surely be the one to make way as he plays the same position.
Liverpool will still want a reasonable fee, though. Shaqiri is currently catching the eye on Euro 2020, proving that he very much still holds value.
We doubt he could fetch £20m, as we say, but £15m? That seems reasonable. If Lazio put that cash up, then it makes sense for everyone to get it done quickly.
Shaqiri just doesn’t have much of a future with Liverpool and has struggled for games even without Elliott around. It’s now time for the next generation to start coming through.
