Could Liverpool actually sign Kylian Mbappe this summer? The Reds have reportedly made an enquiry to Paris Saint-Germain.
Marca claim Liverpool have asked about Kylian Mbappe. The Reds would love to sign the Frenchman and want to know what it could take.
It’s one that sounds pretty outlandish, of course. Mbappe is arguably the most sought-after talent in world football.
So let’s have a look at the chances.
Could Liverpool sign Kylian Mbappe?
Liverpool have long been linked with Mbappe – that part of it isn’t new. ESPN, to name one outlet, had the Reds down as interested earlier in the year.
And there’s a good reason for the interest. Mbappe is out of contract in a year and could leave for free in 2022. Given he’s possibly the most valuable footballer around, that would be a disaster for PSG.
They will at the very least have a price-tag on him, then. We imagine that sparked Liverpool’s enquiry.
Guillem Balague claims that price would be around £155m. That’s an awful lot of money and that’s the factor that throws all of this into doubt.
Because the other side of this (would Mbappe want to join Liverpool?) isn’t as crazy as most might think. But only because this would only be a ‘loan’ of sorts.
No one should believe that anyone is signing Mbappe for a decade. He’s still only 22 and may not even see out a five-year contract. We’d fully expect him to depart after three or four years, as could happen with his PSG deal.
So what Liverpool are actually offering here is a chance to work under Jurgen Klopp for a massive club with a proven chance at the Premier League and Champions League titles. Then he could leave when he’s 26 and still right in his prime years.
There’s no ruling out of a move to Real Madrid – as both ESPN and Marca name as his ultimate goal. Mbappe is easily young enough to make that move happen even after his next club and still have time to become a legend there.
As for Liverpool, they’d end up with a profit. Mbappe will be worth more in a few years than whatever they pay right now. The big question is whether they can afford the fee.
So how likely is it?
The Athletic claims Liverpool must sell-to-buy this summer. That tells us the Reds don’t quite have the money to pull this off.
At the same time, it’s Mbappe. We’re sure they could make something happen to take a chance on this one. For one, they could sell a star forward, given they’d need room for the 22-year-old anyway.
So we can just about see that they can scrape the funds together, if we’re really flexible with our imagination. It still feels very unlikely, though.
There are also his wages to consider. The Marca report claims Liverpool wouldn’t offer him a world-record wage, even if he asked for it. Usually, you’d say that ends all hopes but if Mbappe was chasing money, he’d definitely stick with PSG.
The fact he could leave tells us that isn’t the case.
There’s really one massive factor here – that contract. Not a potential mega-money deal but his current one.
Mbappe may well be free in a year and that makes paying over £100m for him difficult to do. Why not take your chances on persuading him next year?
Now, there will be more competition for him, certainly. But it could still save you a nine-figure sum. And that, above all else, convinces us that this isn’t happening this summer.
