Liverpool will stick with their current midfield players and avoid a new signing unless someone leaves, according to reports. We think that stands to benefit four current options.
This comes from the Liverpool Echo. They claim Liverpool will likely only sign a new midfielder if someone leaves the club.
The Reds are keeping tabs on a selection of midfielders but there aren’t any plans to move just now. That’s despite Gini Wijnaldum leaving the club at the end of the month.
We think there are at least four Liverpool midfield players who should benefit from this stance.
No one benefits more than Curtis Jones. He’s on the cusp of becoming a first-team regular and it sounds as though no one will be put in his way.

If he stays fit, Jones should be behind Thiago, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho in the pecking order. That’s a fierce lineup ahead of him but two are in their 30s.
Jones is well-placed to be the future of Liverpool’s midfield. We’ll back him to kick on further next season and leave no doubt about that.
The Echo claims that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain might play more advanced next season. That could be as a no.10 or in the wide positions.
Either way, Liverpool sticking with what they’ve got makes him a valued member of the squad. We imagine any signing would be ahead of him, after all.
But Oxlade-Chamberlain should get games in a midfield three as a no.10. It’s a role that could suit him very well and the opportunities should come about if no one else arrives.
This is another chance to forge a solid place in Liverpool’s squad.
Naby Keita will forever be an interesting case. He’s not just wonderfully talented but he feels like a perfect fit for Liverpool.
For whatever reason, however, it just hasn’t worked out – yet.
Much like Oxlade-Chamberlain, Keita would be usurped by any signing. It should be a relief for then, then, that such a signing might not happen. That allows Keita to have a fourth season where things might finally click.
Honestly, it’s a testament to his ability that he will likely get a fourth season to show what he can do. Liverpool still see the potential there – hopefully, this is the year it all comes together.
If Liverpool want an extra man in their midfield options, Grujic is the free option. We do think he’ll leave but he’s the one to take Wijnaldum’s squad spot as things stand.
It would put him last in that pecking order but that’s still higher than he’s ever really been. Grujic has just never really had a chance with Liverpool.
Maybe he finally gets it this time around – the opportunity is there. Prove himself in pre-season and perhaps he finally gets a squad spot. And who knows? Grujic could start climbing the ranks over the next season.
