Opinion: Liverpool have their chance as Saul Niguez 'expected to leave'

Liverpool have a chance to sign Saul Niguez this summer. The midfielder is ‘expected to leave’ Atletico Madrid.

We’ve said before that Liverpool should have a look at Saul Niguez. That was back in March when AS claimed the player wanted out of Atletico Madrid.

To us, it feels virtually ideal. Liverpool need a centre-midfielder to replace Gini Wijnaldum and here’s a player four years younger and with title-winning experience.

On top of that, Saul suits playing on the left of a midfield three – exactly where Wijnaldum played. There aren’t many opportunities to sign a title-winning player with over 200 La Liga games and various caps for Spain.

For £30m? That feels like a potential bargain.

He could slot right into this time, no need to wait, and help deliver another title-charge. You’ve potentially got his best years over the course of a five-year contract, too.

Is it all perfect? Of course not. Saul hasn’t quite developed into the player it once looked like he would. This wouldn’t be Liverpool signing another Thiago.

But it would be them moving for a player we think would suit them. Someone Jurgen Klopp could perhaps get to another level.

So it’s exciting to hear that Saul should be on the move over the next few weeks.

Fabrizio Romano says Saul is ‘expected to leave’ Atletico in the coming weeks after receiving several offers. This comes as Rodrigo De Paul looks set to go the other way.

Could Liverpool sign Saul Niguez?

There is a hitch in our plan, here. The Athletic claims Liverpool need to sell players in order to buy new ones.

We can’t imagine too many sales happen before the Euros are done. After all, the likes of Harry Wilson and Xherdan Shaqiri – players we expect to move on – are at the tournament.

So if Saul is moving in the next few weeks, the timeline doesn’t quite add up. Liverpool likely won’t have the available cash to make it happen.

But perhaps there’s some transfer magic on the way that gets the Reds in the mix. It wouldn’t be the first time.

And if Saul really does have several offers already, we find it hard to believe that none come from Liverpool. There’s a deal to be done here and a gap in the squad.

It really feels as though Liverpool should have a look. Saul is a player who could help complete the squad.
