Opinion: Recent reports tell us Liverpool want to sign a special forward

Liverpool reportedly want to sign a forward this summer. That’s despite no strong links to any right now.

The Athletic reported quite some time ago that Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp’s priority this summer was to bring in a new forward. Someone who could add to potential options as a supplemental attacking player.

That was quite surprising at the time. The obvious need was to sign a centre-back, while it was becoming obvious that Gini Wijnaldum would leave. Surely, then, Liverpool need a midfielder?

The summer so far

It’s now mid-June but there are no forwards in sight. Instead, Liverpool brought in Ibrahima Konate to boost their defence.

As for midfield – it’s a mixed bag. On the one hand, there are various outlets saying Liverpool aren’t sure they even want a midfielder.

The Independent say that, as do the Telegraph among others. Liverpool might simply hand a bigger role to Curtis Jones and call it done.

At the same time, multiple trusted outlets name midfielders Liverpool would want this summer. Bild claim there have been talks with Florian Neuhaus, Kicker said the same many months ago.

Then there’s the Athletic saying the Reds want Bissouma. Goal back that up, too.

As for that forward Liverpool want? Nothing. No serious links with any targets – none we’d flat-out trust, anyway.

Mixed messages

So what does this all mean? On the face of it, it appears Liverpool want a midfielder far more than they want a forward. They’ve already got targets lined up for the former, after all.

But perhaps this is a sign that they really do value a forward strongly this summer. Maybe they just want someone quite special.

That midfield spot isn’t that important, it seems, and thus there are a few players who fit the profile. Liverpool have some lined up, per the reports, but haven’t decided whether to move or not.

As for the forward, they seem to want something specific. They don’t appear to have found the right player, though – hence the lack of links.

We wonder if Euro 2020 might help in that regard. There will be a lot of movement and that special forward may become available.

We have no doubt that Liverpool have a long list of forwards they’d love to have. The problem will be their price and availability.

After the Euros, though? That will undoubtedly change for some of them. And that’s when Liverpool can find the special forward they reportedly want to sign
