Timo Werner believes there are real similarities between Roberto Firmino and Karim Benzema. The Chelsea man clearly rates the forwards.
There’s a lot of talk about Karim Benzema at the moment. The Real Madrid striker makes his tournament return for France this week, having been out of the squad for years.
The World champions essentially found a way to improve themselves quite easily – bring in one of the world’s best forwards. Now people are talking about Benzema, with nice things to say.
Jose Mourinho told TalkSport just how highly he rates Benzema, for instance.
“Progressively, he was an amazing player,” said Mourinho. “We speak about Harry [Kane] for example and look to Karim and lots of similar qualities.
“He’s the kind of striker who if he doesn’t score lots of goals, he still plays amazing for the team. Karim is a fantastic player.”
And now Timo Werner, who faces Benzema on Tuesday, talked him up, too. But it wasn’t Harry Kane he compared the Real Madrid icon to – it was Roberto Firmino.
“For me, [Benzema] is incredible with the ball, the way he dribbles, the way he moves, the way he finishes,” he said, per Goal.
“I think he’s like Roberto Firmino at Liverpool, getting the ball early, distributing and still being quick with his qualities in the penalty area.
“With Robert Lewandowski and Cristiano Ronaldo, [Benzema] forms the top three centre-forwards for me.”
Timo Werner praises Roberto Firmino
Firmino didn’t have his best season in 2020/21, so it’s nice to see a fellow forward name-dropping him. We still firmly regard the Brazilian as one of the world’s best, after all.
Firmino and Benzema probably are the two best examples of selfless strikers who help drive the team, in fact. The Frenchman has demonstrated that at the top level for longer, of course, but we can’t say we’d swap Firmino.
This type of forward is rare to find but improves a team greatly. Finding the right player to replace Firmino is one of the toughest tasks facing Liverpool, we think, and Real face the same with Benzema.
