Liverpool will be delighted with Xherdan Shaqiri and his fantastic performance against Turkey on Sunday – but only because it will increase his transfer value.
The attacking midfielder was the star of the show for his nation in their 3-1 win at Euro 2020.
He scored a brace in their 3-1 victory to see the Swiss finish in third place in Group A.
However, Vladimir Petković’s side face a nervy wait to see if they will qualify for the knockout stages as one of the best third-placed teams.
Shaqiri scored a phenomenal goal with his weaker right foot in the 26th minute to double his side’s lead.
Turkey replied just after the hour mark, before Shaqiri nearly burst a hole in the net to regain the two-goal lead six minutes later.
Shaqiri transfer seems inevitable
Despite Shaqiri’s phenomenal performance, he is still likely to leave Liverpool this summer. He has said that his future will be decided after the Euros.
The 29-year-old has never managed to cement a regular spot in the Reds’ XI. In fairness, he was never really expected to.
He was only signed as a deputy and has done a fine job when he has been called upon.
Yet injuries have meant that Shaqiri hasn’t been able to get on the pitch as much as Jurgen Klopp would have liked. That is why he is likely to be upgraded on this summer.
Turkish outlet Shabah report that Liverpool would accept an offer of just £6m for him.
However, this performance will serve as a timely reminder of how much ability Shaqiri has.
Michael Edwards will be able to point this game in negotiations with potential buyers. He will then be able to get them to pay more for his services.
Hopefully, Switzerland will qualify for the last 16 and Shaqiri will get the chance to increase his valuation further before the summer is out.
