Liverpool want FC Porto playmaker Fabio Vieira, according to reports. The 21-year-old recently won an award.
This comes from Portuguese journalist Bruno Andrade. He claims Liverpool have Fabio Vieira on their list this summer and that their interest is only increasing.
Vieira only has one more year on his contract, too, though Porto are working hard to agree a new one. They certainly don’t want to lose the player this summer.
Who is Fabio Vieira?
This is an interesting one. Vieira is a 21-year-old attacking midfielder with remarkably little first-team football to his name. At the same time, he’s a very bright prospect.
Vieira only has five Liga NOS starts with Porto. He’s played just 634 minutes of top-flight football and there’s not too much to say about it.
Last season he scored twice – one penalty – and registered an assist. This season he just got a single assist without any goals. It’s not the record of a traditional Liverpool target, certainly.
He struggles to get into the Porto side ahead of Otavio. That is quite understandable but at the same time, it means Vieira is an unknown quantity.
But Vieira also just won the Best Player award at the UEFA U21 Championships. He helped Portugal get to the final where they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Germany.
The playmaker scored in the opening game after coming on as a sub. That earned him starts all the way to the end, resulting in that award. And it’s not like that’s an easy award to win.
The last five winners are Juan Mata, Thiago, William Carvalho, Dani Ceballos and Fabian Ruiz. They’re all very good players playing for top clubs. Vieira just followed in their footsteps.
Will Liverpool sign him?
Well, this is the first link we’ve seen and that usually means there isn’t much to it. If other places report similar, perhaps we’ll really pay attention.
But we can see why Liverpool would like the move. They don’t have a traditional no.10 in the squad outside of Roberto Firmino, even if the Brazilian never plays there.
Vieira potentially free next summer, too, or at least available at a discount right now. He does seem like a chance worth taking if Liverpool can get Porto to the table.
You potentially get a talented young player for very little, fresh off an award-winning tournament. Vieira could play both in a midfield three or learn to play Firmino’s role.
Liverpool supposedly don’t have too much money to spend right now, so this kind of deal makes sense. If they made it happen, there wouldn’t be much to complain about – even if Vieira is still relatively unknown.
