Liverpool have talked to Inter about Nicolo Barella, according to reports. The Italian is one of the game’s most highly-rated midfielders.
This comes from Gazzetta Dello Sport. They claim Liverpool have opened talks with Inter on Nicolo Barella.
Now, they’re not the only ones. Far from it, in fact.
Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have also started a dialogue. Bayern are apparently ready to offer about £60m.
And it’s no secret why there’s such interest. A mix of Barella’s talent and Inter’s financial situation naturally draws clubs in.

Who is Nicolo Barella?
If you don’t know by now, you’ll likely know everything about him by the end of Euro 2020. Barella is a fantastic 24-year-old midfielder who looks primed to explode.
Barella played a key part in Inter winning Serie A last season, earning praise from all quarters. This is what Fabio Capella had to say about him a few months ago:
“[Antonio] Conte has in his team one of the best three midfielders in Europe, Nicolò Barella – without a doubt,” said Capello to Sky Italia. “He has speed, vision, when he crosses the ball on the right he always puts it right, when he passes the ball it always arrives right.
“Barella has the same stroke as [Achraf] Hakimi but unlike Hakimi who ‘throws’ the ball in the middle, Barella puts it with precision.”
Barella is an inventive player who creates chances, wins tackles, and now he’s a proven winner. And all of this right before he enters his prime.
But none of this is a shock to anyone. Barella has been tipped for the top for some time and was labelled the ‘Sardinian Steven Gerrard’ as he came through the ranks at Cagliari.
Inter’s financial situation
Gazzetta’s initial report hints at it – Inter aren’t financially strong right now and require big player sales. Per the Guardian, they want to raise around £70m this summer in profit.
The easiest way to do that is undoubtedly with a major sale. It doesn’t disrupt the squad as much as selling several smaller players, and you can possibly get your money in one go.
No wonder, then, that several clubs have asked about Barella. There may never be a better opportunity to sign him, especially for a halfway reasonable price.
Do we think this one will go anywhere? No, not really. We don’t get the impression that Liverpool have the necessary funds right now. But if they somehow scrape them together, Barella would be a fantastic signing.
