Liverpool are one of three clubs strongly looking at Patson Daka, according to reports. The striker looks like a potential star with RB Salzburg.
This comes from Sky Germany. They claim that Liverpool are among three clubs wanting to sign Patson Daka from RB Salzburg.
Both Chelsea and, inevitably, RB Leipzig want the player as well as the Reds. Daka could well leave Salzburg, it seems.
“Patson Daka is an incredible player who has sparked Leipzig’s interest,” said Max Bielefeld on Sky.
“In addition, many English clubs are also involved. Liverpool, who have Sadio Mane as a good example of a Salzburg transfer, and even Chelsea. The last word has not yet been spoken.”
Why do clubs want Patson Daka?
Erling Haaland isn’t exactly an easy act to follow but Daka has managed it. He stepped up as Salzburg’s chief goalscorer after the Norwegian left the club and somehow delivered.
To sum it up in raw figures – Daka played 28 Austrian Bundesliga games last season and scored 27 goals. He assisted another seven.
It’s a phenomenal haul and it understandably won Daka Player of the Year in Austria. No wonder teams like the look of him.
But what really tips it all over the edge is that Daka is still only 22. He’s a very young player who’s shining already. His potential seems huge, then, especially in the right environment.
And as Bielefeld points out, there’s a history of successful transfers from Salzburg. Mane is a fine example of one, having moved to Southampton from there.
Then there’s Haaland, of course. Naby Keita spent two years there before joining Leipzig, in fact.
What are Liverpool’s chances?
It’s hard to say without a price-tag but we’d probably back Liverpool here.
Chelsea don’t feel like much of a threat as they reportedly want Haaland. We can’t imagine them moving for Daka when they already plan to sign a bigger striker.
Maybe they still do but that interest could put Daka off. You’d think it would, anyway.
Leipzig are the big threat, though. They have a long history of bringing in players from their ‘sister’ club and Daka would fit them nicely. He’d effectively be their Timo Werner replacement one year later.
They have money, too – Liverpool made sure of that when they bought Ibrahima Konate. As did Bayern Munich by signing Dayot Upamecano.
But at the same time, Liverpool have more financial might than Leipzig – if they can get the money together. The Reds reportedly must sell players to fund new transfers but we wouldn’t think that’s too difficult in Daka’s case.
Players from Austria don’t tend to cost a fortune. And if Divock Origi is one of those sold – and reports are that he will be – then there’s a clear spot for Daka, too.
So time will tell but if Liverpool do want the Zambian, we think the chance is there.
