Jürgen Klopp likes to operate with a small squad. Larger groups lead to players being apathetic if they aren’t regularly involved. As a result versatility is a highly valued trait for the gaffer. James Milner superstar

In 2015 Liverpool signed James Milner on a free transfer from Manchester City.

At the time the move was appreciated but nobody could’ve guessed how influential the man would be.

Six years on, James Milner has made more appearances for Liverpool than any other club in his career.

He has lifted the Premier League and the Champions League and become a modern day Anfield icon in the process.

Now 35-years-old the Yorkshireman must be approaching his footballing twilight years, finding a successor for him won’t be easy.

Liverpool should look at Sergi Roberto

James Milner’s versatility is invaluable.

He’s cropped up in most positions during his time at the club.

We need to sign a player who can fulfil this role when Milly hangs up his boots.

Liverpool should take a look at Sergi Roberto at Barcelona.

The Spaniard is entering the final year of his contract at the Camp Nou and as a result could be available on the cheap.

Even better, if he doesn’t sign a new deal then we can approach him for a free transfer in January.

He came through La Masia as a centre midfielder but has been deployed as a full back in recent seasons.

Despite this he’s played most of his senior games in the middle of the park and even cropped up as a right winger, defensive midfielder and centre back.

This kind of versatility is incredibly useful to Jürgen Klopp, if he’s available cheap then Liverpool should be looking at Sergi Roberto.
