Liverpool have had a crazy season. The 2020/21 campaign threw up all sorts of surprises for Kopites. From injuries to unlikely heroes, it was a real rollercoaster. The ripple effects have got the club pondering what to do over the summer. Nat Phillips has said he thinks Liverpool initially planned to sell him this summer but now they’re not so sure.
Nat Phillips surprise hero
Every senior Liverpool centre back picked up season ending injuries this term.
The Reds lost Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez in the autumn and Joel Matip was in and out of the side until he too was ruled out in January.
This led to the rise of Nat Phillips at Anfield. The lad who had been on the verge of a move to Swansea was all of a sudden thrust into the first team.
Across 17 Premier League appearances he achieved a WhoScored rating of 7.29.
His impressive performances earned him the nickname ‘The Bolton Baresi’.
Nat Phillips on Liverpool future
Just what will happen with the impressive rookie is yet to be seen.
Nat Phillips has opened up on his Liverpool future, telling the Liverpool ECHO:
“I think the situation is, initially they didn’t anticipate me having the season and putting in the performances that I did do.
“Maybe where they might have thought I was just going to do a job and then they would be able to sell me and I would move on, now they’re having second thoughts. I’m not sure.
“I still need to have the conversations with them and just see if there is a role for me there and what role they would want me to play.
“I have loved every minute of it and would love to carry on playing for the club. But I’ve also got to take into consideration what is best for my career, and that will depend on what role Liverpool see they do or don’t have for me and I’ll have to go from there.”
What RTK has to say
Nat Phillips has earned the right to stay at Liverpool.
However, he will be well aware that he will be well down the pecking order again next season.
He would likely be fourth or fifth choice depending on the futures of Joel Matip and Joe Gomez.
Hopefully we haven’t seen the last of him in a Liverpool shirt.
