Report: Watford ready to challenge Liverpool on Harvey Elliott

Newly-promoted Watford are after Harvey Elliott, according to reports. Liverpool face a challenge here.

This comes from the Mirror. They claim Watford are lining up a move for Harvey Elliott.

It would be a loan deal, of course – there’s no chance of Liverpool selling – but the Reds aren’t sure what to do with Elliott just yet.

The teenager shone with Blackburn Rovers in the Championship last season. He created 11 goals, scored 7 and just looked brilliant in what was his first full senior season.

Watford had a front-row seat to that. Elliott actually scored against them back in February and it’s not a shock that they’d be interested here. The Hornets appear to believe the teenager can step up to the Premier League, though.

Harvey Elliott to Watford?

This is a challenging situation for Liverpool and one they won’t want to get wrong. Elliott’s incredible development last season sets him up to rapidly continue in the right direction over 2021/22.

But he needs to be in the right environment. That could be Liverpool – there appears to be a spot for him.

The Reds might fancy giving him a full season of first-team football under Jurgen Klopp. We can certainly see how that benefits him.

But Elliott certainly wouldn’t start every week. He might at Watford, though, depending on their plans for the teenager.

A full campaign in the Premier League as a starter? That could see Elliott explode once again and it’ll undoubtedly tempt Liverpool. But it does come with a risk.

In all likelihood, Watford will battle towards the bottom of the Premier League next season. And with no long-term benefit from Elliott’s development, they’ll want him to perform every week.

If he doesn’t, he’d be out of the side. Simple as that. We saw it with Harry Wilson and Bournemouth, in fact.

That wouldn’t quite be a disaster as Elliott is still so young. It would feel like a lost year and a lost opportunity, however. The safe option is keeping him at Anfield and guaranteeing him minutes.

Liverpool will assess Elliott over the summer and see where’s he at. From there, they’ve got a big decision to make.
