Opinion: Liverpool may fancy Jonathan David chance as Lille boss quits

Liverpool may have a chance at prizing Jonathan David away from Lille this summer. The Reds reportedly rate the Canadian forward.

Lille are Ligue 1 champions after a miraculous season. No one had them down as a side capable of topping Paris Saint-Germain – what they’ve accomplished is truly remarkable.

But they now enter a period of uncertainty. Manger Christophe Galtier has left the club, believing it’s time for a new challenge. So what next for Lille?

In truth, we don’t really know. It’s a strange situation – who will they appoint? What plans will the new guy have?

Those are big questions for their transfer plans this summer. It may well be that next season sees the team head in a different direction. After all, they can certainly cash in on certain players right now.

And we wonder if Liverpool may see an opportunity there.

Liverpool like Jonathan David

Liverpool reportedly looked at Jonathan David last summer before he went to Lille. They considered him strongly, in fact.

Raphinha, Coutinho and Tielemans: The signings Liverpool could make this summer

The Liverpool Echo believes he was on a three-man shortlist along with Ismaila Sarr and Diogo Jota. The Reds moved for the latter, of course, as David went to France for £27m.

But that doesn’t mean Liverpool will move on. For one thing, the Athletic reports that Jurgen Klopp really wants a new forward this summer.

He wants someone who could ‘supplement’ the current options, rather than replace them. We think David fits that bill nicely.

He’s a central forward, which Liverpool lack outside of Divock Origi. But David also showcases skills that the Reds love – he’s one of Europe’s best pressing forwards.

That all looks good on its own before you factor in his 13 goals in a title-winning side at just 21. David seems like a very special talent and one who would fit Liverpool very well.

And the upheaval at Lille may just open a door. Liverpool could tempt the side with a large offer, handing them the chance to rebuild. After all, Galtier’s exit forces them into that position whether they like it or not.

Lille will not be the same team next season no matter what. If they accept that, they may just fancy the pile of cash to help things along. It’s not a guarantee, of course, but we think Liverpool have to sound things out.

David appears to be a special talent. He’s very young, a proven winner already and has skills that Liverpool love. If Lille are open to a move at all, the Reds should get on it.
