Alberto Moreno has revealed that current Liverpool star Fabinho will be supporting Villarreal in this years’ Europa League final.
Moreno’s Villarreal side will take on the Reds’ arch-rivals Manchester United Wednesday’s game.
So, it will come as little surprise that Liverpool players are hoping for a victory for the Spanish side.
The presence of ex-Red Moreno in Unai Emery’s squad is another reason for their support.
Speaking to The Guardian, Moreno said: “I spoke with Fabinho and he said: ‘Bro, on May 25 I’m a diehard Villarreal fan!
“For some teammates, it still hasn’t sunk in yet, how difficult it is to reach a European final. We can’t wait.
“Beating United would round it all off.”
Moreno is unlikely to start the game as he has suffered an injury-hit campaign.
Clear that Fabinho understands the rivalry
It will not come as a surprise to hear that Liverpool’s players will be hoping that United do not get their hands on a trophy this season. But it is fascinating to hear it being made public.
Of course, there is an element of simply supporting their former teammate in a huge game. But a Villarreal win would be made much sweeter if it was Man United that they were beating.
While it is great to see that Moreno still holds Liverpool in high regard, it is even better to hear that Fabinho is taking an anti-United stance.
The Brazilian was one of Liverpool’s best players in the 2020/21 season. He was arguably the Reds’ best player last campaign, Mohamed Salah aside.
His attitude is outstanding, and the fact that he understands the club and the importance of the rivalry with the Red Devils is great to see.
Everyone will remember how well he performed against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side in the game at Old Trafford in 2019/20. Dan James in particular probably still has nightmares about Fabinho’s physicality that day.
It is things like this, along with the fact that he is a world-class player of course, that will make the 27-year-old a Liverpool legend.
