Who would have thought it would have come to this? The Reds were all conquering last season, producing one of the most dominant title wins in recent memory. Now here we are scrapping for a Champions League spot. What do Liverpool need to finish in the top four? Here are the Premier League top four permutations explained:
Who is in the Premier League top four race?
This season has been a funny old one and if you’d told any fan in the country at the start of the campaign that on the final day this is where we’d be they’d have laughed at you.
Two teams out of Leicester City, Chelsea and Liverpool will finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League.
If the Chels drop out of the top four then they can still qualify for the Champions League by beating Manchester City in this year’s final.
What do Liverpool need to finish top four?
As it stands the Reds are in fourth place, level on points with Leicester but ahead on goal difference.
We are a point behind Chelsea but with a superior goal difference.
If Liverpool beat Crystal Palace today then they’re all but guaranteed a top four finish, the only thing stopping them would be Leicester beating Spurs by four goals greater than Liverpool’s win.
If Chelsea fail to beat Villa and the Foxes don’t bang in a silly amount of goals then a Liverpool win would be enough for third place.
A point is good enough for Liverpool as long as Leicester don’t win.
A draw would also suffice if Chelsea are beaten by Aston Villa.
If Chelsea lose and Leicester don’t win then a point would earn third place.
We can still finish top four despite losing.
The Reds would need Leicester City to also lose but with goal difference remaining in our favour.
