Liverpool sign Gini Wijnaldum

When Liverpool signed Gini Wijnaldum from Newcastle United there was no telling just how important he’d be.

The Dutchman arrived for a £25m fee in 2016 with the Magpies relegated.

His one season in the North East saw him announce himself to the Premier League as a goal grabbing attacking midfielder, he even netted four in one game.

Jürgen Klopp brought him to Anfield and made his game more nuanced and disciplined.

He has become an undroppable cog in the midfield machine, he hasn’t played fewer than 33 Premier League games a season since arriving on Merseyside.

Liverpool to lose Gini Wijnaldum

This summer will see the end of the Dutchman’s time as a Red.

The Netherlands midfielder’s contract expires at the end of the season and the player and club have been unable to agree terms on a new deal.

Barcelona were thought to be the front runners for his signature for a while but financial troubles and uncertainty around Ronald Koeman’s future have cast doubt over a move to Spain.

Fans bid farewell to a legend

Twitter users have said their goodbyes to the Dutchman.

He will forever be remembered for his work rate and massive goals – his two goals against Barcelona are etched indelibly into Anfield folklore.
