‘Wow’: Thiago remembers his visit to Anfield back in 1998

Thiago says his only experience as a fan came at Anfield back in 1998. The Spaniard watched his father face Liverpool.

In a strange coincidence, Thiago found himself as a fan at Anfield in 1998. He was just seven at the time but he wasn’t there to see the Reds – he was watching his dad play for Celta Vigo.

Celta won that game, too, knocking Liverpool out of the UEFA Cup. Though, it was a notable game for the Reds – Steven Gerrard made his first ever start at Anfield that night.

13 years later, Thiago remembers the experience.

“Wow,” he told Sky Sports. “I have been addicted to football since I was young. English football, Italian football, Spanish football. But that was my one and only experience as a fan in a stadium.

“It’s one of the biggest memories I have because it was also a very successful night for my dad’s team.

“Now, I want to have the same memorable experience with an amazing crowd in that amazing stadium – but as a player.”

Thiago remembers his Anfield visit

It’s a strange little coincidence to say the least. Thiago, despite a life in football, only ever stood as a fan once and it was at Anfield.

The moment came about, of course, because Thiago is about to witness the Anfield crowd up close as a Liverpool player this Sunday. 10,000 fans will finally be in the stands again, giving the Spaniard his first taste of having those supporters on his side.

We can’t wait. We can’t wait for the first goal, the first tackle – the first everything, really. It’s been a long time coming and, hopefully, Liverpool can sign off their season in front of the fans with Champions League qualification.

If they do, we can promise Thiago that he’ll get another memorable moment from the supporters. He got one 13 years ago and this time he can get one as a Red.
