Liverpool want to renew the contracts of both Alisson Becker and Fabinho, according to reports. They might be the most important at the club.
The Daily Mail claims Liverpool will soon start contract negotiations with Alisson and Fabinho. The Reds hope to tie down their best players long-term, with the Brazilians near the top of the list.
Discussions will begin in July once the players return for pre-season – though, the Copa America could push that back if either or both are involved.
And for us, this is all vital. Alisson and Fabinho may be the most important contracts at the club.
Alisson and Fabinho contracts
Liverpool will have a problem over the next three or four years. Most of their stars are ageing, pushing into their 30s and winding down.
Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Gini Wijnaldum, Thiago, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane will all be at least 30 within 18 months.
That’s not good. Liverpool will start to decline and must rebuild soon. That likely starts this summer, though Diogo Jota’s arrival certainly helped.
But part of securing a successful future is looking at the current stars and seeing who could play a significant role over a five-year contract. Alisson and Fabinho are two players Liverpool should absolutely tie down.
Alisson, as a goalkeeper, is less prone to decline in his early 30s. In fact, he may peak over the next few years. With that in mind, a five-year contract essentially guarantees Liverpool an elite player for that period.
He’s still only 28 and there’s a lot more to come.
Fabinho is a year younger at 27. Again, he’s someone who shouldn’t be as prone to decline as others. His role is far more about holding a position and reading the game, rather than pressing for 90 minutes or making sprints in behind.
So we feel confident that Fabinho at 32 will still be an elite player capable of delivering titles.
These two are absolutely vital to Liverpool. Their arrivals at the club immediately turned the Reds from a very good side into European, World and English champions, in fact. Both of them contribute to a core that’s up their with the best around.
And that should continue for five years, as we see it. The Reds would have highly experienced, world-class players keeping them solid over their entire contracts.
By tying them down, Liverpool are setting the groundwork for another five years of fantastic success.
